Teochew Pop-up Dictionary: Learn Chinese Vocabulary in Teochew
Teochew Pop-up Dictionary is a Chrome extension that allows users to learn Chinese vocabulary in Teochew. Based on the Zhongwen: Chinese-English Dictionary by Christian Schiller, this extension provides a convenient way to look up Chinese characters and their Teochew pronunciations.
To enable the extension, simply press the [潮] button and a mini-help menu will appear. Hovering over Chinese characters will bring up a pop-up with the corresponding entry. Each entry displays Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese (if applicable), Pinyin, Teochew Romanization, and the definition. Users can customize the layout and choose to omit Pinyin.
In cases where a single Chinese character has multiple Teochew pronunciations, the possible pronunciations are grouped by color to reduce clutter. The Teochew used in this extension is based on the prestige form found in the city center of Shantou and reflects the Teochew spoken worldwide.
For users unfamiliar with Teochew Romanization, each Teochew syllable has a playable pronunciation. There is also a Play All feature that plays the audio for all characters with tone changes.
The goal of this Chrome extension is to supplement users with a Teochew or Chinese background, helping them expand and reinforce their vocabulary for conversations with family or while studying Mandarin. The extension aims to improve Teochew proficiency and communication with family.
